Who am I?

Hi!

My name is Nik and I am a scientist.

No, that’s not a cry for help or an introduction at an SA meeting (those exist, right?). What I’m trying to say here is that I’m not a handyman or home repair professional, but rather someone who is quite far from doing the rough kind of work with my hands. I took my last shop class in grade 8 or 9 and produced some very mediocre results with a lathe. Since then, sure, I’ve assembled some IKEA furniture and hung a couple of shelves and pictures on a wall, but that’s pretty much the extent of my handiwork.

I’ve periodically wished to do something with my hands, though, and the Dremel line of tools often came to my attention as something that would give me a lot of options. I finally bought a Dremel 4000 in December of 2012. This blog documents my uses, misuses, discoveries and failures while using this tool.

    Hello Nik, my name is jill. I too like the right tools to make my jobs go smoother and on Google search I found your interesting website with a pic of the flat square c-clamps that you have displayed on your work bench. I’m a creative person as well and I am currently making a tool that would help me to make fashion accessories and those c-clamps are just what I was looking for to attach it to my bench, but I have not been able to find an outlet for them. It would be very helpful if you could tell me where you purchased them. Jill

      Hi Jill,

      Thank you for your comment, and please forgive the delay in my reply.

      I’m not sure how much help this will provide, but I purchased the c-clamps at either Bauhof or K-rauta in Estonia. Both are local retailers that only operate in Estonia (Bauhof) or Scandinavia (K-rauta), as far as I know.

      For what it’s worth, I do not like these particular c-clamps at all – their construction out of flat steel means that tightening with anything other than mild force causes them to flex, which in turn mis-aligns the screw, making it very difficult to release afterwards. I would have much preferred something like the clamps shown here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-clamp.

    Hello Nik; Just discovered your site after buying a Dremel 4000 to replace my ancient Model 370 that died after Christmas. Am familiar w/Dremel tools, and have a lot of accessories (even 5 different collet sizes) from the original, but I’m now trying to find an accessory diagram to help work thru the “Speed Settings Table” in the 4000 Operating Instructions. Even when I used my old one, I always wondered what the optimum speed was for what tool I was using, so I’m excited to see speed settings in the 4000 series manual. Unfortunately, unless you know by memory what all the accessories are called (catalog numbered), there’s no way to correlate the tool accessory with the recommended speeds in the table. Is there such a diagram of Dremel accessories that shows what their catalog number is? Thanks.
